Tryouts & Team Placement

Tryouts & Team Placement

Placement on teams is made through a tryout process held in October.

We typically have up to two teams at each grade level (4th – 8th), with teams of 8-10 players.  Teams will be formed based on the number of players judged to be ready for competitive basketball, not on the number of players at tryouts.

Decisions about player placement are made with the input of Pioneer Elite and high school coaching staff.  Since our teams play against a higher level of competition than typical recreational teams, coaches assess each player for his readiness to play at a competitive level.  It is not in the best interest of a player to put him in a situation for which he is not yet ready, so if coaches feel a player is not ready for a competitive experience, he will not be placed on a team.  We encourage such players to go to camps and open gyms, work on their skills, and try out again the following season.  Teams and players evolve from year to year so it is possible to move from a Red team to a White team from year to year.

During the season, players may be moved from the Red team to the White team or from White to Red if it is in the best interest of the player and the team.  If a team switch occurs, we will discuss with player, then parents prior to the move.
